ents in mourning. >> reporter: it's been a long week, long week ♪ >> reporter: 21-year-old edmond sinclaire made music videos under the name triny west. and that's how many of his friends knew him. his murder saturday night, now a source of heartbreak. >> i was surprised. i was shocked. >> reporter: it all happened just a after 9:30. police say that is when st. claire, his brother and others were walking across campus when they encountered three men. a fight broke out and st. claire was stabbed in the chest. he died in his brother isaiah's arms. >> i saw the other people, too. but it was like, stay with my brother? or go get them? you know what i'm saying? so i had to stay with my brother. so i let them go. >> reporter: police say the crime was not random, but so far, no arrests. and with the killers still on the loose, tensions remain high. >> we believe that this was an isolated incident. but even given that, we are

stepping up our security just to make sure that our students feel that they are in a safe environment. >> i'm very concerned. because if it can happen to him, it can happen to anybody else. you know, if the person who took his life wasn't scared to do it, they could do it to anybody. >> reporter: this murder will be the focus of a special campus wide meeting tomorrow. in fact, the school has canceled classes for one hour so that all students, faculty, and staff can attend. at ume, derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> maryland state police say police were offering a $2,000 reward for information that helps lead to an arrest. weerm, following a-- wjz, following a developing story. a johns hopkins doctor, under investigation by city police, is dead. denise has details in the newsroom for us. >> reporter: 54-year-old nikita levy's body was found at his home in towson. police tell us the former johns hopkins gynecologist was under

investigation for secretly recording patients. according to police, earlier this month, levy was fired by hopkins, when another employee reported the allegations to hopkins security staff. in a statement, they say levy had been photographing patients with personal photo and video equipment. a spokesperson for hopkins says baltimore county police have told her that levy killed himself. back to you, mary. >> reporter: thank you. dr. levy's name and information has been taken off the johns hopkins community physicians website. >> reporter: a shakeup in the police department. there's a new person in charge of training. it follows the devastating incident, where a trainee was shot in the forehead. wjz stays on the story, live at the training academy. investigator mike hellgren reports on the change in leadership. mike? >> reporter: kai. six people have already been suspended in the wake of this incident. and the commissioner plans to speak before the recruits and the training staff. tomorrow morning, he's going to talk about safety and welcome the new director of the police academy.

>> reporter: the fallout is growing after a police officer was shot in the head during a training exercise last week. wjz investigations have already revealed procedures were not followed. and the exercise was not properly supervised. now, the police commissioner has chosen a new director of training. major joseph smith. >> it's a decision that the commissioner made. i support the commissioner's work there. and his actions subsequent to the incident. >> reporter: major smith's past jobs included police academy commander. firearms training instructor. and internal affairs commander. >> reporter: major smith was valedictorian of his academy class. he's been with the department now more than 25 years. >> reporter: he has a tough job ahead, restoring confidence and performing a sweeping safety review. as part of our investigation, wjz has reported training officer william scott kern was frustrated his trainee kept raising his head, when he

should have remained hidden. so kern put his weapon up into a glass window and fired. he thought he was using a fake weapon with simulator bullets. instead, it was his real service weapon. >> the key is there are mistakes. we all agree with that. it was a cloud over city hall. and in the police department. >> reporter: the commissioner explained the shakeup in training leadership, saying, as we investigate the facts of this horrific tragedy, it's imperative that we put our best leaders in front to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again. >> reporter: and maryland state police are leading the investigation into the shooting. live in northwest baltimore, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> mike, thank you. at last check, the injured trainee is in critical condition. well, tonight, the white house is doing some damage control after a version of its immigration reform bill became public. the proposal was posted online by usa today over the weekend. the president says it's just a

backup, in case a bipartisan group of searntszs fails to divide a -- devise a plan for the issue. but republican lawmakers have a very different view on the leak. florida senator marco rubio said the measure would be dead on arrival if sent to congress as is. he said it doesn't do enough to beef up border security. baltimore's most famous doctor is taking on president obama. world renowned neurosurgeon dr. ben carson speaks out against the president's policies, with the president just a few feet away. adam may has a look at the enormous impact of the speech. >> reporter: hi, kai. just got off the phone a couple of seconds ago with dr. ben carson. he said he is very surprised by all the attention his speech is getting, conservatives like rush limbaugh, sean hannity, lining up behind him. >> dr. ben carson, highly critical of president obama's healthcare and economic policies during the national

prayer breakfast. >> moral decay. fiscal irresponsibility. they destroy themselves. and if you don't think that can happen to america, you get out your books, and you start reading. >> reporter: the speech, cheered by conservative pundits. >> r. >> amazing speech. move over, president obama. the doctor is in the house. gize. >> a wall street journal journal editorial each calls for him to run for president. >> what do you think of the attention he's getting on this issue? >> running for president requires more than just making a good speech. >> reporter: dr. lester spence, who specializes in black politics has a theory about the republican embrace of dr. carson. >> the real simple reading, i don't think it's right, but the real simple reading is, like, wow, if we could find somebody black and intel jebtdz that -- intelligent that thinks like us, we can easily put ourselves back on the path of political success. >> reporter: carson tells abc news he's unsure about a political future. >> as i always say in every

part of my life, i will leave that up to god. >> reporter: and i just asked dr. carson that same question, does he have any plans to get into politics? he said he is an independent but he has been asked by republicans before to go ahead and run against some well-known democrats, including senator ben cardin. as of right now, he said everything is in god's hands, he has no plans to run. his book has now soared to number 1 on amazon's best seller list. definitely gets -- getting a lot of attention. >> reporter: after the breakfast, president obama shook 2kr canc carson's hands and congratulated him on the speech. here's a live shot from sky eye chopper 13. beautiful sun, as it is getting ready to set. and it could get a little cooler tonight. wjz's first warning weather team. meteorologist bernadette woods and bob turk are updating our temperatures am we'll start with bob inside. >> you bet. for a little while tonight,

temperatures will fall just below freezing. but there's actually warmer air that it starts moving our way. by tomorrow morning, it's knock a lot warmer than we saw this morning. we were at 20. right now, we're at 40. 39 in ocean city. 42 in ocean city. there's rain out to the west of us. we'll see some of that heading our direction. with that frontal system, it will get eventually colder. but by that time, the rain will be out of here. a little more on that tuesday forecast. bernadette woods in the outback. >> that's right. once again, bringing winter weather. but mainly off to our north. this is how it breaks down. winter weather advisories in effect for the western are the part of the state as the system comes in. you can see, snow off to our north. wintry mix to the west. wouldn't be surprise federal some people in central parts of the state did see a mix at the very begin -- beginning or end of this. but this is a rain event, as we are going back into the upper 40s tomorrow afternoon. as we said out west, though, this is a different story, with the winter weather advisory in effect. we'll have more on this coming up shortly. back to you inside.

>> man is facing charges for allegedly hitting a crying child on a flight. jessica kartalija explains how the incident is causing widespread outrage. -- outrage. >> reporter: it happened on a flight from minneapolis earlier this month. now the man is facing federal charges. >> reporter: when jessica bennett and her 2-year-old adopted son jonah, took their seats next to joe hundley, their flight got off to a rocky start. >> i said, oh, we're sitting next to you. and he just basically rolled his eyes and growled at us. >> reporter: hundley allegedly began complaining that jonah was too big to sit on his mother's lap, becoming more outspoken as the flight continued. >> he was noticed with his comment. he would turn my light back on, after i turned it off. kind of saying he was the staff in regards to my son. so i took us out of the situation and we stood by the back bathroom. >> reporter: jessica stood with jonah for 90 minutes only returning for the landing.

when they began to land, jonah began to cry. >> he lookedda the me in a really hateful way and said f'ing [ bleep ]. >> reporter: shocked, she questioned hundley. >> i said, what did you say? >> he then pushed up against her space and repeated himself. when she pushed back, he slapped jonah across the face. hundredly is now charged with assault, punishable up to a year in jail. while jonah suffered only a minor scrape, his mother worries about long-term damage. >> he has suffered effects from this for sure. >> reporter: hundley was president of a division of agc aerospace, an airplanes parts manufacturer. the company issued a same, statement, calling his behavior offensive and he is no longer employed there. >> most airline companies don't require a child to have their own seat until age 2. back to reality. gas prices are up. and there is no end in sight.

it is clear. 40 degrees in central maryland right now. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. a $40 million investment is starting to pay back at the port of baltimore. after six months of installation and training for im -- four immense cranes are up and running. alex demetrick reports, they

could outrun the competition. there are none bigger on the east coast. four gigantic cranes, designed for one purpose. >> to take it from one part of the world to the other. >> reporter: with it expanding, even larger vessels are coming. to stay comfet tive -- competitive, they must stand 40 feet high, dwarfing the men who assembled and began operating them this month. containers today, represent only a fraction of what's coming up on the super sized ships. >> it means more cargo is going to come here. it's also creating more jobs. >> reporter: for all of those who work along the supply chain. >> reporter: include jobs for people, definitely what we need. >> reporter: but more cranes give baltimore a leg up. >> because we're further inland, up the chesapeake bay, we're actually closer to the midwest population mark than

other east coast ports. >> reporter: so is being able to lift 1,87 pounds, about -- 1, 087 pounds about the same as a space shuttle. >> that's a cost saver. >> reporter: alex demetrick, eyewitness news. >> the only other east coast port with similar cranes is in norfolk, virginia. for new york and new jersey to compete, they must first raise a bridge by 64 feet to allow larger ships in. >> so sorry. if you are waiting for somebody to get home from work, let's check on the roads with kristy breslin. we've had a lot of volume this afternoon, especially along 95 and 895. if you're traveling 895, expect a lot of brake lights there over to 95. as far as 95 is cashed, in -- concerned in the northbound direction, delays stretch well past whitemarsh boulevard. that's also due to an accident at the beltway.

christie ileto introduces us to the winner whose words took him straight to first place. >> reporter: when joshua campbell isn't hitting the books he's wowing crowds with inspirational words. >> washington-- booker t. washington said success is not measured by the position one has reached in life as by the obstacles he has overcome. >> reporter: he deliver a speech on hopkins' world renowned neurosurgeon, ben carson and the woman who helped him. >> i spoke on dr. carson's mother, her name was sonya. and i think nobody thinks about the role she played in his life. >> the winner of the oratory contest is joshua campbell. >> words cannot explain how excited i was. >> he is thanking one woman for his win. >> how did you incorporate the relationship you have with your mother into your speech. >> i would say that i'm a good

student and i do well in school. but i wouldn't say that that'sault about me and all about my studying habits and all about what i do. because i feel like my mom is like 75% of that. >> i was very surprised. >> reporter: his mother said sunday was her first time hearing the speech. >> i was really blessed to hear that what i do and what i have been doing, homeschooling them and just doing the mom thing, has had an impact on him. >> reporter: at 14, joshua walks away with a 2300 dollar prize that won't just go toward one day paying for med school. >> i want to give back and not just keep it all for myself. >> reporter: joshua told me his older brother got second place in last year's contest. he said his win gives him bragging rights but assures me it's all in brotherly love. >> i goat it. get it. the 20 finalists all receive scholarships and are the prizes.

say live look outside from sky eye chopper 13. >> sun is still up. sun is still up. >> almost 5:30. >> do you realize we've gainedang hour of sun-- gained an hour of sun in the afternoon. >> ah. >> turning the corner right towards spring, sooner or later. let's take a look at temps. snow showers coming through the area. for a few minutes, looked like a bris -- blizzard. but only lasted about five to 10 minutes. we are in the upper 30s to low 40s. 40 here. 39 even out in oakland. 43 in cumberland. and 42 in washington. locally, temperatures ranging from 37, bel air. 36, rock hall. kent island, and annapolis by the bay, which is pretty chilly, to 40 over in columbia.

we now have a southwest wind. beginning to bring in milder air. there's a lot of warm air. in fact, temps in southern virginia right now, near 50 degrees. we won't get that warm. and overnight, we'll drop back into the upper 20s. but during the morning, our temperatures will be increasing. so it will be a lot warmer tomorrow morning than it was this morning. 22 degrees. tomorrow morning, probably low to mid-30s. antomorrow afternoon, mild air here. 38 in kansas city. there is a front right through here. and that is bringing showers. but much colder air just behind that front. 21, 13, and zero. up at winnipeg. so we'll have a warmup tomorrow, with showers. and the front comes through. and we'll see colder temps. but it will be dryer, come wednesday. it will be windy, too. because low pressure up across the great lakes is going to move well to our north. it will drag that front across the region. we'll see clouds increasing tonight. by morning, cloudy skies. probably won't see any showers tomorrow afternoon. by that time, temps will be in the mid- to upper 40s.

only exception, if the precip gets in early enough, garrett and allegheny county, could see a little sleet and snow early, before it mixes with or changes to rain. even out there to get warmer. very strong warm front to our north. creating period of clouds right now. front coming through tomorrow afternoon, with showers. and clears us out. sunshine, but a breeze and colder temps back here on wednesday and thursday. sunny, but cool. so we've got more changes this week. south winds ahead of that front. at 15 to 20. with gusts to 25. and a small craft advisory. 10:00, to tuesday night. bay temp around 38 degrees. tonight, clear early. but clouds around 29. that's almost 10 degrees warmer than this morning. up to 49 tomorrow afternoon, with periods of rain. won't be all that heavy. but it will get breezy. and the front comes through. in the evening, temperatures drop but it clears out, just in time. shouldn't have any icing issues around here hopefully. >> just in time for life is

it's 5:29. 40 degrees and clear. good evening. thank you for staying with eyewitness news. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. it a billion-dollar industry. baltimore county police crack down on counterfeiters at a flea market in dundalk. monique griego has more on a growing problem. hi, monique. >> counter counterfeit items hurt the economy and consumers, still some shoppers don't see a problem with it. >> reporter: saturday morning, baltimore county police shut down all shopping at north point plaza flea market in dundalk. they served warrant -- search warrants on 16 vendors. >> i thought it was a waste of time, when they could be out catching criminals. and noble -- nobody really cares. >> reporter: rita says most

flea market shoppers know they are buying knockoffs. >> everybody don't have the money to buy the authentic, the paraphernalia they got out here, especially for the teams. >> reporter: vendors are accused of selling everything from fake purses to electronics and clothes, with bogus brand names like nike, apple and ugths. >> -- uggs. it's a huge industry. a multibillion dollar industry. they raided the flea market in patapsco and uncovered a counterfeiting ring with ties to new york city. >> reporter: in recent years, counterfeiters have goen so good, their items are making it into main stream market places. and it can be pretty easy for vendors to lower the price and pass off it. >> consumers can't even tell a legitimate product from a counterfeit. and they are being duped. >> reporter: but legitimate vendors say they are also being

hurt because consumers no longer have trust in flea market products. >> it's a shame everybody has to suffer for what some people do. but that's the american way. >> reporter: and police say no charges will be filed in the case until trademark experts can take a look at all of the merchandise. and that could take weeks. kai, back to you. >> monique, thank you. the reforty three market-- the flea market will reopen next weekend. the model found -- family of the model found dead in oscar pistorius's dead girlfriend are demanding answers. >> reporter: lawyers for olympian oscar pistorius will seek bail. he has been in jail since thursday, charmed with -- charged with murdering his girlfriend, model reeva steenkamp. her mother was seen asking, why my little girl? why did he do it?

but his father says it was a tragic accident. that his son acted on instinct because he thought it was a burglar in the house. investigators have pieced together a different scenario. cbs news has learned, police believe reeva steenkamp slept next to pistorius. that she was once in the bedroom and tried to hide in the bathroom. and three more shots hit her as she covered her head with her hands. the shooting has unleashed a barrage of unconfirmed tabloid headlines, including one that police found a bloody cricket bat a the at the scene. that bat is a key part of the investigation. >> one who said that steenkamp may have used it to try to defend herself. other reports say that he may have tried to use that to assault her first. >> reporter: pistori su u

-- pistorius made olympic history but now his career is on hold. >> pistorius has canceled all future track meets. a $9 million bail in the abduction of rape of a 5-year- old in philadelphia. vic has new details in this continuing investigation. >> reporter: christina was arrested for what police are calling the targeted kidnapping of a little girl from her school. she dressed in a burqa and posed as the child's mother back on january 14th. police believe she took the girl to a nearby home and that's where the 5-year-old was assaulted. three others were questioned by police, but none has been charged. the little girl was found in the next day in the park. >> vic, thank you. christina regusters moved to philadelphia last year to live with relatives. she has a court appearance set

for march 6th. a draft of a white house immigration reform is getting a frosty reception on capitol hill. lawmakers are suggesting the administration is more interested in scoring political points than a bipartisan solution. danielle nottingham has more from washington. >> reporter: republicans issue accusing president obama of meddling in bipartisan immigration reform plans. after a draft of the white house immigration reform proposal leaked over the weekend. >> leaks don't happen in washington by accident. this raises the question that many of us continue to wonder about. does the president really want a result? >> reporter: the white house is downplaying the leak, saying the draft is orange a backup -- is only a backup if lawmakers don't come up with an immigration reform proposal. >> we will be prepares with our own plan if these ongoing talks between democrats and republicans break down. >> reporter: in the senate, four democrats and republicans

are hammering out their own plan. they are hopefulful they'll have a bill ready in march. >> the time has come topaz -- to pass comprehensive immigration reform. now is the time to do it. >> reporter: the leaked proposal would alow some illegal immigrants to become permanent residents within eight years. boost funding for border security. and require businesses to know the immigration status of their workers. republican marco rubio, one of the senators working on the bipartisan plan, blasted the white house draft, calling it "dead on arrival in congress." rubio slammed the proposal for not addressing guest workers or the potential for a future influx of illegal immigrants. in washington, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> and gop critics also say the proposal doesn't do enough to strengthen border security. president obama says he wants congress to have a bill ready by next month. we're following breaking

news right now out of glen burnie. there's a fire. let's go to sky eye chopper 13. captain jeff long has more. >> reporter: good evening. there are flames coming out of the top floor window of this building. this is on crain highway in glen burnie, anne arundel county fire department on the scene. and the white smoke indicates that they just knocked those flames down. but there's more down below. so active fire. they're working on this right now. this is between crain highway and richie highway up in glen burnie. reporting live from sky eye chopper 13. i'm captain jeff long. back to you. >> we'll bring you more information as it becomes available. if you think gas prices have gone up every single day for the past month, you're correct. according to triple a, the price of a gallon of gas has risen 32 straight days. analysts say a rise in price in crude oil. the national average is around $3.73 a gallon.

locally, pretty much the same story over the past month, the price for a gallon of regular gas has gone up 36 cents. right now, the average price is at $3.74. a plan to bring more trees to one baltimore city neighborhood is taking root. today are a plan to plan dozens more. >> everyone look at me. ready? >> reporter: a ceremonial tree planting along light street in federal hill, the backdrop for a more concrete plan to bring more leaves and shade to this neighborhood. >> a green neighborhood is a beautiful neighborhood and a thriving neighborhood. >> reporter: there are challenges to growing trees in the city. most only live seven years because of wear, tear and neglect. but richard pollen, known as the tree guy, tells me federal hill will plant 30 new trees this spring. and 15 plus in the fall. >> they beautify the area. they give a place for wildlife to live. they help cool down buildings in the summer. they protect us from the sun. they help with ir --

damages buildings and injured thousands of people. scientists say it indicates it was a rocky meteor, about 10% iron. they believe a larger fragment is still under water. nasa says the meteor was 55 feet wide and weighed 10,000 tons. more reaction today to the apparent suicide of country music star mindy mccready. she burst onto the music scene when she was just 18. as manuel bahorkes reports for wjz, her quick success was followed by a slow, painful, unraveling. >> i can tell he's going to ask me to dance ♪ >> reporter: mindy mccready rose to fame in 1996, with her debut album, 10,000 angels. but it was her life outside the recording studio that stole the spotlight. >> just google, and you'll see the images that pop up. she's got several mug shots. >> reporter: on top of stints in and out of jail and rehab, the singer was plagued by a long list of other problems.

eight years ago, billy mcknight, the father of her oldest son, was charged with attempting to kill her. in 2008, she made headlines again over a rumored affair with baseball pitching legend roger clemens that reportedly started in her teens. two years later, on cbs news, she addressed reports that she had tried to commit suicide twice before. >> i was never in a state in which i was conscious and with it and said "oh, i want to die." >> reporter: sunday afternoon, authorities found mccready's body on the porch of her arkansas home, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. her death comes just weeks after david wilson, the singer's boyfriend and father of her 10-month-old son, was believed to have killed himself. >> he didn't just -- he didn't just touch my heart. he touched my soul. [ crying ] he was my soul mate. >> reporter: like mccready, wilson's body was found on the same porch. >> i think it obviously speaks on the pain that she was

feeling. that for whatever reason, she chose to go to the same location and do the same thing that he did. >> reporter: mindy mccready was 37. manuel bahorkes, new york. >> roger clemens made a statement today, regarding mccready's death. he said, i had heard over time that she was trying to get peace and direction in her life. the few times i had met her and her manager, they were extremely nice. >> reporter: 40-foot plunge. a 6-year-old boy is recovering after falling down a malibu waterfall. the boy had been on a hike when he got ahead of them and fell from the top of the waterfall. s are cue corker -- rescue workers saved hayden. frazier suffered a puncture wound to his head but fortunately has no broken bones. facebook must have some friends that are pretty good accountants. that's because the associate network will receive a half billion dollar tax refound. the -- refund. the tax watchdog group says

facebook's annual earnings showed it made $1.1 billion in pretax profits. they used stock options and employees for the tax writeoff. reports of influenza-like illnesses have gone down for the third week. according to the centers for disease control and prevention, fewer states are reporting high activity levels. last count, they reported 38 states the week before. despite the low numbers, deaths continue to rise. 64 children have died from the flu this season. in today's healthwatch. two new studies suggest what your children watch on television couldast -- could affect their behavior. it's not just what they're watching but how long they're watching it. >> reporter: television is a regular part of life at the walsh house. carrie and john say they have rules in place for watching, but with six kids -- ♪ [ music ] ♪ -- it isn't easy to keep them

entertained. >> we have tvs in -- >> every room in the house. >> basically, every room. and in the cars as well. >> reporter: but two new studies in the journal pediatrics say that tv could affect a child's behavior. new zealand researchers looked at about 1,000 children and found the more tv children watched, the more anti-social and aggressive they can become. >> it also means really more depression, more anxiety, more keeping to one's self. >> reporter: pediatricians are concerned not just about how much time kids are spending in front of tv, but also what types of shows they're watching. >> reporter: in the second study, u.s. researchers found preschool-aged children can imitate what they see on tv. >> a lot of children's programming, even though it's childrenning programming, still shows a lot of violence. >> reporter: the american academy of pediatrics suggests children, older than 2, should watch less than two hours of tv a day. and that kids younger than 2, shouldn't watch any tv at all.
